District Attorney Gregor Von Klingenberg is made Honorary Citizen of the town. But when Achim Ziedler, a reporter for the town newspaper, goes to interview him, no one comes to the door. He peeks through the window and sees the ‘Honorary Citizen’ making it with Friederlike, his housemaid. Achim can’t resist writing some sarcastic comments about Klingenberg’s morals in his newspaper article. The hypocritical Honorary Citizen is enraged. He arranges to have Achim fired, and forbids his daughter Maria, who is in love with the reporter, to have anything to do with ‘that dirty scoundrel’, on pain of being disinherited.
In the final scene, the Honorary Citizen realizes he’s been beaten and agrees to all their demands in order to retain his public halo.
